Klay sustains leg injury in workout, undergoing tests

Just when the Warriors thought Klay Thompson would be ready for the start of the 2020-21 NBA season, they got potentially bad news roughly 90 minutes before the start of the 2020 NBA Draft.

The NBA All-Star guard suffered a leg injury during a workout in Southern California on Wednesday, the Warriors confirmed.

The Athletic's Shams Charania first reported news of Thompson's injury.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported, citing sources that Thompson injured his right leg during the workout.

Charania and Wojnarowski both reported that Thompson is undergoing tests to determine the severity of the injury.

Charania reported that Thompson was unable to put any weight on his right leg when exiting the gym.

NBC Sports Bay Area's Monte Poole reported that the injury "looked bad," and ESPN's Marc Spears reported that it was "not good."

If there is good news for Thompson and the Warriors, it appears he didn't re-injure his left ACL, which he tore against the Toronto Raptors in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals last June. He missed the entire 2019-20 season while recovering from the injury.

Thompson had been cleared for full basketball activities and took part in the Warriors' voluntary minicamp earlier this offseason.

Cousins says Warriors-Rockets refs are ‘letting too much go'

The Warriors are hoping for a bounce-back season after finishing with the worst record in the NBA (15-50) during the 2019-20 season. Those hopes are dependent on Thompson and Steph Curry returning from injuries and the addition of the No. 2 draft pick.

But if Thompson suffered a significant injury and is forced to miss significant time, that would put a serious dent in the Warriors' plans for the 2020-21 season.

With the Warriors slated to make a selection with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday night, Thompson's injury could cause general Bob Myers to change direction and possibly take a different player than he was planning to entering the day.

On a potentially momentous day for the Warriors' franchise, they are holding their breath for good news regarding one of the most important players in the organization's history.
