From fan to teammate, Poole embraces being Klay's ‘lil bro'

Klay Thompson went off for 36 points in the Warriors’ 111-107 win over the Utah Jazz. During his postgame press conference, he reflected on his performance and even made a paper airplane out of the stat sheet.

A special bond is forming between Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson.

The two Warriors shooting guards are together on the court for the first time this season, and despite the growing pains that come with playing with a new teammate, it's clear Poole and Thompson are capable of feeding off each other's energy.

Poole joined 95.7 The Game's "Steiny & Guru" on Wednesday, and was asked about the emotional hug he and Klay shared after the Warriors' 111-107 win over the Utah Jazz at Chase Center and his overall bond with the Splash Brother.

"It was just a huge game, and obviously we know what Klay is capable of," Poole said. "He is so electric, and he can heat up and go nuclear whenever. I think we were just waiting for that moment when we can both do it at the same time. Being able to have [Andrew Wiggins] step up how he did. We've been waiting all year, all season, for everybody to be out there on the court at once, and we're so close.

Before Thompson made his triumphant return to the court after a two-plus-year absence in early January, Poole was starting in his place. Once Thompson's return neared, Warriors coach Steve Kerr transitioned 22-year-old Poole to a role off the bench. There never was any competitive side-eyeing between the two, especially since they'd never played together before.

Poole, in fact, always has been a Klay Thompson fan, and is just happy to see his teammate thrive.

"For me personally, being the team player that I am and the playmaker, I love seeing other people have a great game or go nuts," Poole added. "That's something that kind of stuck with me since I was young. Seeing him dominate the way he did and help us win that game, it was amazing to feel, amazing to be a part of. I was in high school not too long ago watching these guys win championship after championship, so it feels amazing to be a part of, and I just really wanted to show him I'm lil bro and I'm watching, and I'm a fan, for sure."

As Steph Curry continues to work his way back from a sprained foot that will sideline him for the final three regular-season games, it will be Poole and Thompson leading the Warriors' offense. The Warriors already have secured homecourt advantage in the first round of the NBA playoffs but will look to finish strong.
