Kerr shocked he was named one of NBA's 15 greatest coaches

Steve Kerr is in just his eighth season as an NBA head coach, all with the Warriors. He already is among the all-time greats, too.

Kerr on Tuesday was named one of the NBA's 15 greatest coaches of all time, as the league celebrates its 75th anniversary. The selection committee consisted of 43 current and former NBA coaches, and Kerr was taken aback by the honor.

"That was kind of shocking to see my name on that list," Kerr said Wednesday night before the Warriors play the Jazz in Utah.

The Warriors head coach enjoyed his own 15-year playing career where he won five championships. Over that course of time, he played for three coaches who made that same prestigious list -- Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich and Lenny Wilkins -- making it that much more surreal for Kerr.

"It felt strange to see your name next to some people you played for," he said. "... It was very humbling and an incredible honor to see my name on that list."

Choosing between the Warriors and the New York Knicks, Kerr took the Golden State gig ahead of the 2014-15 season. Smart choice. He had experience as a general manager and in the broadcast booth, but he had never coached at any level.

Starting your career with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Co. doesn't hurt.

"I also know it's a direct result of having incredible talent on the roster," Kerr said. "You look at that list, pretty much every coach would agree that the reason they're on there is because they were blessed with great talent and then were able to have success.

"I didn't anticipate that."

Kerr said he always hoped to be a coach, he just wanted to wait until he felt his kids were old enough and out of the house for him to feel comfortable in pursuing the new chapter of his life.

He led Golden State to 67 wins his first season as head coach and the Warriors won their first title in 40 years. The Warriors then set a new regular-season wins record his second season with 73, and the previous record belong to Kerr's Chicago Bulls team he played for. The Warriors reached five straight championships to begin his coaching career, and won three of them.

Along the way, he broke multiple records and is grateful every day to be the Warriors' head coach.

"My main thought is just how lucky I was to have landed with the Warriors in my first coaching job," Kerr summed up.
