Kerr explains how Poole can learn valuable lesson from Lee

Share

Warriors guard Jordan Poole had an up-and-down rookie season but last year’s first-round pick is ready to take the next step after putting in a lot work in the offseason.

Steve Kerr had some very nice things to say about Jordan Poole last week.

"Biggest thing with Jordan, he's had a great offseason," Kerr said. "He's been our most consistent worker day in and day out. He's been at Chase working with our coaches. He's put the time and effort in. He's really earned a right to play and get his opportunity.

"I think he's earned some good fortune. I hope the basketball gods reward him accordingly because he's done everything possible to put himself in position to succeed."

But that doesn't mean the second-year combo guard is going to play big minutes this season. In fact, there could be a number of nights when he never leaves the bench.

"Jordan has gotta maybe take a little bit of a lesson from Damion Lee. Damion has been valuable to us the last couple years because he's always ready," Kerr told the media Wednesday afternoon. "Even if he's not in the rotation, I know I can throw him out there and he's gonna produce.

"That's a really important aspect of being a young player in this league -- staying prepared and staying ready. That may be Jordan's role this year."

Why I believe Draymond truly is ‘sorry' for Poole punch

How Warriors won the game vs. Wizards, but Poole won the night

Even with Klay Thompson sidelined the whole season because of a torn right Achilles tendon, the Warriors added Kent Bazemore and Brad Wanamaker in free agency.

And with Kelly Oubre and Andrew Wiggins starting on the wings, it's going to be difficult for Poole to find consistent playing time.

"He may not end up in the rotation, but he will absolutely have opportunities to play during the year," Kerr said. "He's gonna have to be ready for every one of them."

Poole -- the No. 28 overall pick in the 2019 draft -- finished his rookie season strong, averaging 14.3 points and 3.9 assists, while shooting over 47 percent from the field over his final 13 games.
