Lacob believes Steph's extension worth it despite risk

The Warriors' biggest offseason task was getting Steph Curry to sign a contract extension, and the two-time NBA MVP did just that, inking a four-year, $215 million deal that will keep him in the Bay Area through the 2025-26 season.

Curry became the first NBA player in history to sign a second $200-million plus contract.

The cost of doing business means that in the final year of Curry's extension, the Warriors will pay him a staggering $59.6 million, nearly $14 million more than he is making this season.

That's a big number to pay a player, even one of Curry's caliber, in their age-38 season, but Warriors CEO Joe Lacob isn't overly worried.

"He's Steph Curry," Lacob told Bonta Hill, Chris Mullin and Dorell Wright on "Warriors Pregame Live" on Thursday. "Not only is he an incredible player, the likes of which we maybe have never seen. He's revolutionized basketball in a lot of ways and he's a great human being. He's just a terrific person. So anything we could do to sign him up to another extension, though it's a big number for us, worth it, right? Absolutely worth it.

"So the only risk in it from a business standpoint would be, he's 38 when it's over, and so the question is, is he still healthy at that point? I mean, that's a risk. Having said that, he takes care of himself like nobody else, so I think it's great."

Curry will turn 34 during the current 2021-22 NBA season, but he doesn't appear to be slowing down. As Lacob pointed out, Curry is in world-class shape and he's still at the height of his powers. He won the scoring title during the 2020-21 season and is off to a great start to this season. He was named Western Conference Player of the Week for the 17th time in his career Monday.

Lacob joked that if Curry follows the lead of seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, a third massive extension could be on the table.

"If he's Tom Brady, he's got another one coming," Lacob said with a laugh.

Don't put anything past Curry. He might just play until he's 45 years old.
