Allen says Miller, not Steph, is greatest shooter of all time

Steph Curry made another crazy, jaw-dropping shot Tuesday, this time converting on a twisting layup against the Spurs.

At some point early in the 2021-22 NBA season, Steph Curry will surpass Ray Allen for the most 3-pointers in NBA history.

Curry has revolutionized basketball with his shooting and will reach Allen's mark of 2,973 made 3-pointers in a fraction of the games it took the Hall of Famer to set the standard.

Curry just passed another Hall of Famer, Reggie Miller, for No. 2 on the all-time 3-pointer list, and the Warriors' superstar arguably is the best shooter most NBA fans have ever seen.

Interestingly, Allen is among the naysayers who don't believe Curry is the greatest shooter ever, though he believes the two-time NBA MVP is in a different category because of the type of player he is.

"I think it comes with categories when you talk about shooters," Allen told CBS Sports' Macklin Stern on Tuesday. "Steph is in a category of his own, the way he plays the game. When I think about shooters, someone like Klay Thompson comes to mind. He's more in the realm of how I shot, how Reggie [Miller] shot -- coming off screens, moving without the ball.

"Steph is more on the ball, the point guard shooter. So it's a different approach to the game. He's an extremely incredible ball-handler, so it's a different mentality when you're handling the ball and not coming off screens. But I look at Reggie Miller and what he did -- run off screens and just the fluidity of the game when he played it. For me, he was somebody I always looked up to and thought was amazing at how he performed his tasks."

When pressed if he was saying Miller, not Curry, the greatest shooter ever, Allen confirmed that to Stern.

To no one's surprise, Steph bounces back in Warriors' rout of Suns

What we learned as Steph Curry scores 25 points to fuel Warriors' win over Suns

"Yes, Reggie [is the GOAT] because of the way he set the game up, the way he played the game," Allen said. "Obviously, I incorporated a lot of who he is into how I played. He was the standard-bearer. Without him, we don't have a formula for moving forward. So that's how I view it because it allowed me to do the things that I was capable of doing."

Dub Nation will respectfully disagree with Allen, and some might argue that Curry's style of play and all the added responsibilities he carries makes the numbers he's able to put up even more impressive than what Allen and Miller did.

Just like the Michael Jordan-LeBron James "GOAT" debate, the Curry-Allen-Miller debate is in the eye of the beholder. Curry has stretched the limits of the the basketball court. The NBA never had seen anyone shoot like him when he entered the league in 2009.
