Alien invasion? Odd take on Mavs' potential comeback vs. Warriors

Share

The Warriors’ comeback fell short against the Mavericks in Game 4, but Jordan Poole is happy with their effort and is looking forward to “another chance” in Game 5.

Coming back from a three-games-to-none deficit in the NBA playoffs is a feat so impossible, no team has ever done it.

The Dallas Mavericks are one step closer, however, after defeating the Warriors 119-109 in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals at American Airlines Center on Tuesday night.

But to win Games 5, 6 and 7 would be an out-of-this-world accomplishment for Dallas, especially if you’re asking Kevin Wildes of FS1’s “First Things First.”

“I believe in the Mavs, Nick, like I believe in aliens,” Wildes told his “First Things First” co-host Nick Wright on Wednesday. “Highly, highly, highly unlikely. But if I walked down the stairs and there was an alien eating an egg, a waffle at my table, I would be shocked -- but at the same time, I’d be like, ‘You know what, I’ve heard rumblings.’

“... There were rumblings, there were reports and there’s three reasons why I’m giving the Mavs an alien invasion-esque chance.”

The odd comparison from Wildes came in response to Wright, who laid out his argument for the Mavericks' potential comeback story just seconds before. In Wright’s eyes, anything can happen if Dallas pulls out another victory over Golden State in Game 5, and he likened the odds to a game of blackjack.

Just like extraterrestrials, an NBA team climbing out of such a deep deficit hasn’t been officially documented before, but that’s not to say it could never happen.

It all depends on those three reasons Wildes mentioned, he believes: a continued attitude adjustment by the Mavericks, as they displayed in Game 4, a Game 7-like performance from Luka Dončić for the remainder of the series, and potential nerves from the Warriors over blowing another 3-1 lead after originally holding a three-games-to-none advantage.

“Now, it’s not a 51 percent chance. It’s not an 11 at the blackjack table like Nick is saying,” Wildes said. “But there is a chance … I’d be a little bit nervous.”

As the Mavericks travel back to San Francisco for Game 5 of the series on Thursday night at Chase Center, the Warriors can rest assured their opponent won’t come in peace.
