LaMelo Ball pumps brakes on LaVar's Warriors 2020 NBA Draft fit opinion

LaVar Ball has become infamous for his hyperbolic predictions regarding his three sons and their basketball prowess. During an appearance on the “Say Less with Kaz” podcast last week, Ball said he wouldn’t be thrilled about his son LaMelo -- who universally is considered one of the 2020 NBA Draft’s top prospects -- being drafted by the Warriors.

"That's the part I don't like about Golden State," LaVar said. "They got Klay and the other guys, and now you want to put Melo in that mix to say you got to follow these guys. Melo ain't no follower. He don't need to do what they do, let them do they thing."

LaMelo didn’t seem to agree, in a later-deleted tweet sent out late Wednesday night (screenshot h/t Lonzo Wire’s Jacob Rude).

The youngest of the three Ball brothers, LaMelo is a tantalizing prospect but comes with some major red flags. He famously left high school and tried playing in Lithuania professionally at 16, before returning to the U.S. and playing at a prep school for a year. He spent the most recent basketball season playing in Australia’s NBL with the Illawarra Hawks.

Efficiency is not something Ball excels at, as he averaged 17 points a game in the NBL while shooting just 37 percent from the field.

Ball is 6-foot-8 and possesses an incredible offensive repertoire for a lead guard. He’s shown an ability to make shots from all over the court and likely could play multiple positions in the NBA.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s latest mock draft has the Warriors grabbing Ball with the No. 2 overall pick. With so much uncertainty surrounding this year’s class, Golden State general manager Bob Myers has a multitude of options with what is guaranteed to be a pick in the top five.
