Klay not buying ‘never the No. 1 option' for NBA top 75 snub

Injured Warriors star Klay Thompson has been simmering for roughly 48 hours, still upset that he was left off the NBA's 75th Anniversary team.

The NBA completed the three-day reveal Thursday before the Warriors beat the LA Clippers at Chase Center, and when Thompson wasn't one of the 76 players named to the team (there was a tie, hence 76, not 75 players), he voiced his frustration on Instagram soon after. On Friday morning, he still hadn't gotten over the snub and posted again on Instagram.

That brings us to Saturday, when Thompson got on his boat with a few friends and sailed out into the San Francisco Bay. As he tends to do, the five-time NBA All-Star went live on Instagram to let his thoughts fly and answer questions.

Unprompted, Thompson briefly brought up the top-75 list.

"So you know this top-75 list you know, everyone wants to comment, 'Well, you know, you were never the No. 1 option,' " Thompson said. "I've seen a lot of 2s and 3s on there too. Don't give me that bullcorn. Come on."

Thompson and fellow three-time NBA champion Draymond Green weren't on the list, but two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry made the cut.

Prior to the Warriors' game against the Clippers, coach Steve Kerr told reporters he believed Thompson and Green "definitely" should have been part of the anniversary team. After the Warriors held on to beat Paul George and the Clippers. Green admitted he was more upset for Thompson than anyone.

While Thompson clearly still is unhappy with not making the list, Green and Curry tried to add some levity to the situation Saturday by trolling Klay with a No. 77 jersey in his locker at Chase Center.

Surprisingly, Klay wasn't upset by the troll job. Instead, he proudly rocked the No. 77 jersey while working out with Draymond, Steph and Andre Iguodala.

Thompson has missed the last two NBA seasons due to major lower leg injuries. He missed the 2019-20 season after tearing his left ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, and then tore his right Achilles during a pick-up basketball game on Nov. 18, 2020 as he was closing in on his return from the ACL injury.

Thompson is expected to return to the Warriors' lineup before the end of the calendar year, and he already was supremely motivated to come back with a vengeance before the snub. Now he has more fuel for his fire and almost assuredly will blowtorch opponents when he's back to full strength.
