Kuminga still out on dunk contest despite ‘easy' reverse slam

Klay Thompson went for 20 first-half points against the Kings and Jonathan Kuminga added 18, including a reverse dunk that got the Chase Center crown jumping. The Warriors extended their win streak to eight games.

Jonathan Kuminga's incredible athleticism has impressed the Warriors from the minute the rookie forward entered their building.

Jordan Poole said he often asks Kuminga to rate his dunks based on the quality of his jump, with 10 being perfect. Poole told reporters after the Warriors' win over the Chicago Bulls on Jan. 14 that Kuminga has said he's never had a perfect 10.

That's hard to believe given the number of poster dunks the young wing already has put on film this season. He added to the highlight reel in the Warriors' 126-114 win over the Kings on Thursday at Chase Center, throwing down a nasty reverse dunk that showed why Draymond Green was upset the rookie didn't want to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest.

The dunk was apparently child's play for Kuminga.

"That's a pretty easy thing," Kuminga said Thursday of the reverse dunk.

While the reverse dunk blew the roof off Chase Center, Kuminga is of the opinion that he wouldn't score well in the dunk contest.

Kuminga's Warriors importance on display in win vs. Pelicans

What Draymond told LeVert after heated Kuminga exchange

"I feel like I'm just super bouncy when it comes to me playing the game," Kuminga said. "I just take off out of nowhere. In warmups, I'm not really bouncy, so I don't have a lot of tricks so that's why I didn't want to be in it."

At 19, Kuminga's youthful innocence has the Warriors rookie playing free and not fully grasping how good he is and can be.

But the rest of the Warriors know.

“The future is bright, especially with those two. They’re going to be damn good pros and probably both probably will end up being All-Stars," Draymond Green said of Kuminga and fellow rookie Moses Moody before Thursday's game.

“You saw what Jonathan is capable of,” Klay Thompson said on Jan. 25 after a win over the Dallas Mavericks. “His jump shot looked great. It’s very fluid. Obviously, his ability to play above the rim is something that you can’t really teach."

Kuminga is developing at an impressive rate early in his NBA career, and the Warriors hope that his path to stardom is as smooth and easy as the dunk he threw down Thursday night.
