NBA draft expert believes Kuminga ‘looking like a steal'

The Warriors were the biggest question mark going into the 2021 NBA Draft. But when they were on the clock with the No. 7 overall pick, there was only one answer.

Draymond Green knew the answer. He texted it to general manager Bob Myers, and the rest of Golden State's front office couldn't have been more excited this player was available. The player?

Jonathan Kuminga.

With Summer League wrapped up, it's clear Kuminga was the right answer. ESPN's NBA draft expert Mike Schmitz couldn't help but praise Kuminga when breaking down how rookies performed this summer.

"While it has always been about consistency and sustainability with Kuminga, he's looking like a steal for the Golden State Warriors at No. 7," Schmitz wrote.

Though Kuminga only shot 37.6 percent from the field in Las Vegas and 27.8 percent from 3-point range, Schmitz believes there's much more to the numbers.

"What Kuminga showed as a downhill driver, shot-creator, occasional shotmaker and versatile defender left more of an impression on me than him needing 18 shots to score 18 points consistently," Schmitz wrote.

After putting up 18 points in his one game in the California Classic at Golden 1 Center, Kuminga then averaged 17.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 0.8 blocks over 27.6 minutes per game. He showed off his strength and athleticism as well as playmaking ability and better defense than advertised.

Kuminga still is just 18 years old. He's a raw prospect with a mountain of potential. But whether he increased his chances of helping the Warriors this season or if it's as a trade chip, he made the move look much smarter for Golden State.
