Wiseman's instant energy at practice praised by Warriors

After James Wiseman's first practice Monday with the Warriors, one word kept getting brought up to describe the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft: "Energy."

Draymond Green said Wiseman's "energy was through the roof." Coach Steve Kerr said "he was playing with huge energy." Warriors assistant coach Bruce Fraser couldn't help but use the word, too.

"He looked really good for his first day," Fraser said Monday night on KNBR's "Mark Willard Show." "As a lot of rookies can be, he was excited to be out there. He also, not vocally, but he brings an energy. He was playing really hard. That's something that you don't necessarily teach, and sometimes big guys don't always play with that kind of energy.

"It was exciting to see him bring that level of energy to our practice and that kind of length, protection at the rim, and he's skilled."

Wiseman missed his first five training camp practices and the Warriors' first preseason game for an undisclosed reason. He clearly made his presence felt right when he stepped on the court, though. The young center will not play Tuesday night against the Kings, but Kerr isn't ruling him out for Golden State's preseason finale against Sacramento on Thursday.

Whenever Wiseman does join the Warriors for a game, he will instantly brings two facets to the team: Length and energy.

Wiseman, 19, is listed at 7-foot-1 and has a 7-foot-6 wingspan. He is the only 7-footer on the roster, and is extremely athletic. His skill set should bring plenty of lobs to Chase Center in the near future.

When looking at Wiseman, he isn't just some lumbering big man. He runs the floor like a gazelle, can swat shots and has a smooth shooting stroke for his size. There are plenty of reasons for optimism around the Warriors' latest prized project.

"I think he has a chance to be really, really good," Fraser said. "It's an exciting piece that we've added."
