How GM Myers broke Klay injury news to Steph, Draymond

Bob Myers and the Warriors got some brutal injury news on Thursday, as it was confirmed that star Klay Thompson suffered a torn Achilles in a workout Wednesday, and is "expected to miss the 2020-21 season."

In speaking with reporters the day after selecting James Wiseman, Nico Mannion and Justinian Jessup in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Warriors' general manager and president of basketball operations detailed how he and the team's brass broke the official news to Steph Curry and Draymond Green.

"You know, I've learned in life sometimes words don't do it," Myers said Thursday. "It's not news you want to break on the phone. But that's how it was done. And a lot of silence. I was with [CEO Joe Lacob] and [coach Steve Kerr] and [assistant general manager Kirk Lacob] and probably what you're hearing right now, nothing. What are you going to say?

"Those guys have been in it more than I have with Klay. There's no better bond than players with players. So I can't experience it from their standpoint. I know it hurts."

First and foremost, it's devastating for Thompson, who just missed the entire 2019-20 season after tearing his ACL during the 2019 NBA Finals.

"Klay has a strength of will but right now it's a tough day for him," Myers said. "It hurts. He'll get to a place, I think, where he's on the road. But right now, like you or I or anybody, this is a tough day for him to hear that news. It's hard. It's tough."

Wade believes ex-teammate Butler has ‘perfect' role with Warriors

Thompson is one of the franchise's most beloved all-time players, and losing him for another season has cast a dark cloud over what was supposed to be a night of celebration for the Warriors with the NBA draft finally arriving.
