Bill Simmons makes case for Warriors drafting Davion Mitchell

Multiple mock drafts have the Warriors selecting Davion Mitchell with the No. 7 overall pick.

But some draft analysts believe that Golden State won't take the Baylor product at that spot.

This topic was discussed at length last week on The Bill Simmons Podcast.

Ryen Russillo: "I don't know that Bob Myers ... if their evaluation of Davion Mitchell is that he's the seventh best player in the draft and he's there -- then they'll go ahead and take him. But when it's described as, 'Well, he's more ready because he's older and they're a championship contender immediately ...' I don't think a front office -- even with their situation -- would be saying, 'Hey, let's take the lesser player just because of the schedule of our age of the roster.' I think that's when you start making mistakes.

"Bob Myers -- it would surprise me. Unless he likes Davion that much. But it would just surprise me if he's like, 'Hey, there's two or three guys I like more, but I'll take Davion because we think he fits in and he's gonna catch up to our guys quicker.' I think that's something a lesser GM would do."

Simmons: "Can I make the extended case for him? Roster fit -- I actually think he's the perfect guy to play with Steph. Defensively, you need him to guard [Damian] Lillard and Jamal Murray. In the league that we have now, you need a guy who can guard other teams' point guards -- Chris Paul one night and Dame Lillard the next night. And the Warriors have never really had that. They've always had to have Klay Thompson guarding small guys. I think you can play him with Klay and Steph."

Mitchell was the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2020-21, and should be able to make immediate contributions defensively.

Simmons and Russillo also chatted about the other end of the floor, specifically Mitchell's 3-point shooting ability.

The 22-year-old shot 28.8 percent as a freshman at Auburn and 32.4 percent as a redshirt sophomore at Baylor. He then made a fantastic 44.7 percent of his attempts this past season, and certain people believe this was a "fluke."

Mitchell's detractors point to the fact he shot below 66 percent from the free throw line across his 94 college games.

Should that be a red flag? Maybe. Maybe not. The draft is hard.

Mitchell -- who was at Chase Center last Thursday for a private workout with the Warriors -- probably will not be on the board when the the Dubs are on the clock at No. 14.

So it's safe to assume it's either No. 7 or not at all.
