Kings add Hall of Famer Joe Dumars as special advisor to Vlade Divac

SACRAMENTO -- Reinforcements have arrived.

With a crucial offseason at hand, the Kings have added a major piece to their front office in Hall of Famer Joe Dumars. According to the team’s official press release, Dumars will act as a special advisor to general manager Vlade Divac.

A star in Detroit, Dumars turned to the business side of the game following his playing career. He ran the Pistons as the team’s president of basketball operations from 2000 to 2014, leading the franchise to the NBA title in 2004.

Under Dumars, the Pistons made eight consecutive playoff appearances from 2001 to 2009, including two NBA Finals and six trips to the Eastern Conference finals.

He was relieved of his duties in Detroit in 2014 after five consecutive playoff misses, and has acted as the president of the basketball division for Independent Sports & Entertainment since 2017.

Dumars joins a slightly depleted Kings front office after the dismissal of assistant general manager Brandon Williams at the start of the offseason.

While his exact duties with the team are unknown at this time, Dumars and Divac have a long-standing relationship, and he adds another seasoned executive to the squad that includes assistant general managers Peja Stojakovic and Ken Catanella.

Sacramento enters the offseason with over $60 million in salary-cap space. The Kings are attempting to end their 13-year playoff drought, but they have plenty of work to do in free agency if they hope to accomplish that feat. Adding another experienced voice to the room is a solid move.
