Bucks lose second-rounder in failed Bogi deal with Kings

Kings general manager Monte McNair met with the media to discuss why he decided not to match the Atlanta Hawks’ offer sheet for Bogdan Bogdanovic and what Buddy Hield means to the team.

The Milwaukee Bucks have been penalized for their role in the failed Bogdan Bogdanovic sign-and-trade with the Kings from mid-November

The Bucks will lose their 2022 second-round draft pick for violating league rules, the NBA announced Monday.

In a release, the NBA said that the Bucks "violated league rules governing the timing of this season's free agency discussions" with Bogdanovic. The NBA's investigation concluded that early discussions did occur between Bogdanovic and the Bucks prior to the start of NBA free agency, which goes against the league's tampering rules.

The Athletic's Shams Charania first reported the news of the penalty Monday morning.

Back on Nov. 16, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Bucks and Kings had a sign-and-trade agreement where the Bucks would send Donte DiVincenzo, DJ Wilson and Ersan Ilyasova to Sacramento in exchange for Bogi. However, the league's free agency period didn't officially open until Nov. 20.

Shortly after the initial reported agreement, the deal fell through and the NBA announced an investigation. Bogdanovic returned to restricted free agency and ended up signing a four-year, $72 million offer sheet with the Atlanta Hawks. The Kings declined to match, and Bogi officially will start his Hawks career this week.

The Kings are going into rebuilding mode without Bogdanovic, as new GM Monte McNair did not want to add any other long-term salaries on the books as the team looks to build around budding star De'Aaron Fox and rookie Tyrese Haliburton.

Sacramento opens its season Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets.
