Why Bonds would like to bat against Bumgarner, Kershaw

Former Giants superstar Barry Bonds once again fell short in the voting for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Bonds received 61.8 percent of the vote and will have one more year to get past the 75 percent threshold.

Longtime Giant Barry Bonds found as much success as just about any player in MLB history at the plate, as he remains the league's all-time career leader in home runs (762), walks (2,558) and position player WAR (162.8).

When asked by New York Mets outfielder Dom Smith on Instagram Live about what current pitchers he'd like to get a chance to face, he chose a pair of NL West southpaws, including a Giants legend (h/t Sarah Langs).

Both Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw and now-Arizona Diamondback Madison Bumgarner would present a formidable test for Bonds, even at the peak of his powers in MLB.

Kershaw has held left-handed hitters to just a .195 batting average over his decorated MLB career, which finally added a championship in 2020 after numerous examples of playoff futility.

Bumgarner, who put together arguably the sport's most clutch relief performance in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, has paired an impressive regular season career with a thoroughly dominant playoff record.

Unfortunately, Bonds hung up his cleats before either made it to the Show.

Bonds hit over .300 for his career against right-handed pitchers, but was no slouch against southpaws. He hit .289 when facing lefties over his decorated career, and even had a higher batting average on balls in play (BABIP) with left-handers (.287) than he did against righties (.283).

These would be some dream matchups to take in with all the players in their prime, but for now we'll just have to settle for the endless highlights Bonds provided over his Hall of Fame-worthy career, and what Kershaw and Bumgarner have left as the 2021 MLB season approaches.
