What Father's Day means to Giants announcers Duane Kuiper, Mike Krukow

While Giants broadcasters Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow cherish Father's Day now, the holiday wasn't always a big deal in their household.

Growing up in the 1950's and 1960's, their respective father's weren't keen on celebrating the holiday.

"Father's Day, when I was a kid, wasn't a big deal," Krukow said recently. "Mother's Day was. And my old man, he kind of rolled with it. It's kind of gone into the same mode since I've become a dad. But I do remember when I was a kid, my dad was a big guy, 6-foot-3, about 300 pounds, and I was just proud to walk with the old man. He was my dad, and he never said a whole lot to me, he was just always there, and I thought 'Well, if I ever got to be a dad, I was going to be a dad the same way he was to me.' "

Kuiper echoed that sentiment.

"Your dad and my dad, they're the product of [being] born in the [1920's]," Kuiper said. "Father's Day to my dad was like any other Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Father's Day? Big deal. You're right. We'll make mom a lot happier. Let's just make Mother's Day every day. That was his deal."

Krukow has five kids, while Kuiper has two. During their time as teammates with the Giants from 1983 through 1985, Kuiper got a first-hand look at Krukow as a father.

"I watched you being a dad, and I absolutely adored being around your kids," Kuiper said. "And it would be a lie if I said to you, because of you and [Mike's wife] Jennifer is the reason I had kids. That would be a lie. But I did learn a lot from you, especially on how to interact with your kids and how to have fun with them.

Five takeaways from Giants' excellent 2025 season-opening road trip

"I think a lot of Father's Days, we were gone, and we didn't have FaceTime or Zoom. On Father's Day, we picked up the phone, whether we were in Pittsburgh or Cincinnati, and we got to listen to our kids tell us 'Happy Father's Day.' We also got to listen to mom in the background telling the kids what to say, but it meant the world to us when we were on the road, and I miss my kids being little. I really do."

If the 2020 MLB season hadn't been impacted by the global coronavirus pandemic, the Giants would have been in Miami on Sunday, wrapping up a six-game East Coast road trip.

Instead, with the season in limbo, Kruk and Kuip get to spend a rare Father's Day at home, hopefully with their kids.
