Boras claims Giants had ‘reasonable time' to finish Correa deal

Scott Boras and the Giants were in a chess match over Carlos Correa's next contract. And in the end, the agent called checkmate.

Correa’s reported 13-year, $350 million agreement with the Giants was put on hold because of a disagreement over the star shortstop’s physical. But Boras had no time to waste.

“We reached an agreement. We had a letter of agreement. We gave them a timeframe to execute it,” Boras told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Wednesday. “They advised us they still had questions. They still wanted to talk to other people, other doctors, go through it.

“I said, ‘Look, I’ve given you a reasonable time. We need to move forward on this. Give me a timeframe. If you’re not going to execute, I need to go talk with other teams.”

And Boras did just that.

Correa now is a New York Met, The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported late Tuesday night, after reportedly agreeing to a 12-year, $315 million contract.

The Giants have yet to address exactly what worried them in the physical, but fans want answers because, to Boras, Correa is healthy.

“You’re talking about a player who has played eight major-league seasons,” Boras told Rosenthal. “There are things in his medical record that happened decades ago. These are all speculative dynamics.

“Every team has a right to go through things and evaluate things. The key thing is, we gave them [the Giants] medical reports at the time. They still wanted to sign the player and negotiate with the player.”

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi released a statement after Boras went public, and confirmed the disagreement over Correa's physical.

"While we are prohibited from disclosing confidential medical information, as Scott Boras stated publicly, there was a difference of opinion over the results of Carlos’ physical examination," Zaidi said in the team-issued statement. "We wish Carlos the best."

The Giants planned to introduce Correa at 11 a.m. PT on Tuesday at Oracle Park, but about three hours before, the team put out a seven-word statement announcing the press conference was postponed. One day later, he had a new agreement on the other side of the country.
