MLB rumors: Longtime Giants coach Hensley Meulens could join Marlins

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hensley Meulens was one of the first two people to interview for Bruce Bochy's old job, but now it's looking like Meulens won't be with the Giants at all next season.

Meulens is not one of the finalists for the manager job and now appears headed for Miami. According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Meulens and the Marlins are discussing a position on the coaching staff. Meulens and Marlins manager Don Mattingly played together with the Yankees in the early 1990s.

Meulens just finished his 10th season on the Giants' staff, and his second as Bochy's bench coach. He previously had served as hitting coach. When the Giants moved Meulens to bench coach, the expectation was that he would soon get an opportunity to manage somewhere -- possibly in San Francisco -- but he thus far still is waiting.

Meulens has interviewed with several organizations over the last three years and reportedly finished second to Aaron Boone for the Yankees job two offseasons ago. Along with third base coach Ron Wotus, he was part of the first round of interviews for Bochy's old job, but neither internal candidate made it to the final round.

It's likely the new staff will include neither one of them, and more changes are on the way. Bullpen coach Matt Herges took a job as Diamondbacks pitching coach earlier this week.
