MLB Rumors: Giants interviewed Royals' Pedro Grifol for manager job

It appears the quality control coach background could be a common theme in managerial position job hunt.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported, citing a source, that Royals quality control and catching coach Pedro Grifol interviewed Thursday to take over for former Giants skipper Bruce Bochy after he announced his retirement.

Grifol, in an interview recently with The Athletic said he had been attached to the Royals organization for several years and was a part of the World Series run and gushed about being a part of Kansas City after long-time manager Ned Yost announced he would be retiring as well.

He's obviously open to additional opportunities as well.

The 49-year-old was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the sixth round of the 1991 MLB Draft and had a short stint in the minors. He also worked for the Seattle Mariners organization as their director of minor league operations.

A's quality control coach Mark Kotsay was one of the latest to interview for the Giants manager position, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic. He has a connection to Giants president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, when he was in the A's front office as Kotsay roamed the outfield for Oakland.

Zaidi, and the Giants staff have already interviewed Hensley Meulens and Ron Wotus, who were longtime members of Bochy's staff.
