When Giants outfielder Alex Dickerson steps up to the plate or greets his teammates in the dugout, he is often serenaded by a chant from fellow players and Giants fans alike.
The chant happens to coincide with the first four letters of his last name, "Dick."
So with MLB Players' Weekend taking place at the end of August, everyone was looking forward to Dickerson sporting the infamous nickname across his back over the three days.

But instead, he went with ... "Grandpa."
And yes, we were just as disappointed as you were. But it turns out, Dickerson did not really have the full say.
“We tried every angle, and [MLB wasn't] having it for whatever reason even though it’s on the back of my jersey every day,” Dickerson told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Resigned to using another nickname, Dickerson said that "Grandpa" was what he was called back in high school after his first back surgery.

So while it appears MLB had a say in preventing Dickerson from being able to sport the four-letter word, why was Baltimore Orioles pitcher Richard Bleier allowed to go by "Dick" on his jersey?
It's a mystery.
