How Correa reacted to Mets agreement from SF hotel room

Carlos Correa was supposed to be the next shortstop of the Giants.

After reportedly agreeing to a 13-year, $350 million contract with San Francisco on Dec. 13, Correa was dressed and ready for his introductory press conference at Oracle Park on Tuesday morning when he received word that the Giants canceled his press conference due to a concern with his medical history after a physical on Monday.

Correa's agent Scott Boras then proceeded to re-negotiate with other teams as the original deal with the Giants appeared to be falling apart. In a stunning turn of events late Tuesday night, Correa agreed to a 12-year, $315 contract with the New York Mets, handing the Giants another crushing defeat in pursuit of a superstar free agent.

A recent article by The Athletic's Andy McCullough, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon detailed the dramatic turn of events after the fiasco with the Giants and how Correa's shocking deal with the Mets came to fruition.

While Correa and Boras waited in their respective San Francisco hotel rooms, the esteemed super agent went to work negotiating a new contract with Mets general manager Billy Eppler and owner Steve Cohen. When the terms of the contract were finalized and Boras broke the news to his client, Correa couldn't contain his excitement.

"Separated by a three-hour time difference and the Pacific Ocean, Boras and Cohen hammered out the details," The Athletic article reads. "Boras operated out of his San Francisco hotel room. Correa understood that he would need to shift to third base to become a Met.

"The position change did not dampen his enthusiasm, Boras explained. When a deal was agreed upon – somewhere around 3:15 a.m. in New York, 12:15 a.m. in San Francisco and 9:15 p.m. in Hawaii – Boras grabbed his client. Correa had been staying down the hall. Upon hearing the offer from the Mets, Boras said, Correa tackled his agent and tossed him across the bed. “C4,” Boras said, noting Correa’s uniform number, “is explosive.”

After Correa's $350 million megadeal with the Giants fell through, it took all but a handful of hours for Boras to save the day and re-negotiate a new $300-plus million contract with the Mets. Correa, understandably, wanted to give his agent a big hug ... or something like that.

“He was excited,” Boras added, “about being a Met.”

After a tumultuous afternoon and an unprecedented turn of events, it was a happy ending for Correa and Boras.

The Giants on the other hand? Well, not so much.
