Giants pitcher Tyler Beede chatted with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Amy Gutierrez about rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and San Francisco’s playoff push.
Monday was an off day for the Giants, but one of the biggest of 2020 for a player who should be a huge part of their future.
Right-hander Tyler Beede played catch for the first time since having Tommy John surgery on March 20. That first day throwing with a baseball is always a huge one for a rehabbing pitcher, and Beede said he hit the milestone right on schedule.
"I've been feeling great," Beede said via text. "Coming off of (throwing) plyos/weighted balls for the last month gave me a lot of confidence before yesterday and it proceeded to feel great again yesterday."

The recovery from Tommy John is long and tedious, and Beede has detailed much of the process on his Instagram page. In recent weeks he has been allowed to throw indoors, gently tossing small plyo balls off a net in an office.
Beede entered the year as the clear favorite to win the fifth spot in the rotation and was sitting in the upper 90s early in the spring. But he felt tightness in his right elbow and had an MRI the first week of March that revealed an elbow sprain and flexor strain. The surgery was performed in Dallas in late March and Beede has been back home in Texas all summer.

The success rate for pitchers coming back from Tommy John has gotten remarkably high in recent years, and Beede should be ready to go early in the 2021 season.
Johnny Cueto, the last Giants starter to have the procedure, was back in the rotation 13 months later.
