Again! Giants stun A's with late homer, win Bay Bridge Series

A day after LaMonte Wade Jr. played the role of hero, it was Donovan Solano’s turn, crushing a two-run homer in the eighth inning off AJ Puk to give the Giants an eventual 2-1 win over the A’s.

For the second straight day, the Giants stunned their rival -- and quite possibly the entire baseball universe -- with another late pinch-hit two-run homer to steal a game they probably should have lost.

On Sunday, it was veteran infielder Donovan Solano who played the role of hero, coming off the bench and crushing the go-ahead homer off A's reliever AJ Puk to give the Giants an eventual 2-1 win in the Bay Bridge Series finale at the Oakland Coliseum.

Solano's dramatic homer came a day after LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a pinch-hit two-run go-ahead homer in the ninth inning off A's closer Lou Trivino to power the Giants to a thrilling win in the second game of the series.

Per Sportsradar, this is the first time since 1900 that the Giants have hit pinch-hit homers in the eighth inning or later to erase a deficit in back-to-back games.

The pinch-hit homer was the first of Solano's career and the 14th by the Giants this season, equaling the franchise's most in a season since 1974, done by the 2001 club.

With the win on Sunday, the Giants have reclaimed The Bridge Tom Pellack Memorial Trophy, winning it for the second time in its four-year existence.

Logan Webb got the start for the Giants and pitched another dominant six innings, but was in line for the loss before Solano's homer. He allowed five hits, one earned run and walked one while striking out seven.

Over his last 12 starts dating back to May 11, Webb has a 1.63 ERA in 66 1/3 innings. With Kevin Gausman searching to regain his All-Star form and Anthony DeSclafani back on the Injured List with an ankle injury, the 24-year-old Webb has established himself as the team's most reliable starter with five weeks left in the season.

The Giants are the first team in MLB to 80 wins this season, and they will get to celebrate that feat with a day off Monday before heading to New York for a three-game series with the Mets.
