González's funny story from epic ‘welcome to the bigs' moment

Giants rookie Luis González remembers the moment he officially felt like a true big-leaguer.

But what happened afterward might be even more memorable.

The 26-year-old outfielder recently sat down with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Therese Viñal for an exclusive “Summer Sunday” interview, where he shared his “welcome to the big leagues” moment -- and it’s a little bit stickier than you might think.

“The first time we played Milwaukee … and I hit my first career major-league homer,” González told Viñal. “That was so surreal to me, and just getting my first big-league home run and kind of helping the team win that day.”

In just his 13th big-league game and fourth with the Giants, González’s first career home run on April 25 came at the perfect time. The two-run blast broke a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers and ended up giving the Giants a 4-2 win -- just a sign of what was to come from the young player.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better “welcome to the big leagues” moment than a game-winning homer, but the fun wasn’t over yet for González.

“And then the shower that I got afterward [from] the players, like beer shower and all that stuff,” González continued. “That was a lot of fun.”

Beer shower is putting it lightly, Viñal quickly found out after pressing González for more details.

“I was there in the shower an extra 30 minutes getting all that stuff off me,” González laughed. “It was not just beer. It was, like, shaving cream, I’m pretty sure there was some mayo in there, mustard.

“I got it all.”

While it might have seemed more like a celebration fit for a barbecue than a home-run hitter, it’s clear the Giants gave González a memory and “welcome to the big leagues” moment he’ll remember for the rest of his life.

And if his play this season is any indicator, there will be plenty more celebrating where that came from.
