Giants to push back Will Clark jersey retirement, 2010 celebration

San Francisco will take another minor step towards normalcy next Monday, with hair salons, barber shops, museums and outdoor bars scheduled to reopen as long as they follow safety protocols. At some point this summer perhaps Oracle Park will open up, but even if the owners and players reach an agreement, it's just about a lock that fans will not be allowed at any Giants games this season.

Because of that uncertainty, the Giants are altering their 2020 schedule even beyond the number of games. Will Clark has been told that the ceremony to retire his number has been postponed to 2021, and the Giants also officially have postponed all activities celebrating the 2010 team that finally brought a World Series title to San Francisco, NBC Sports Bay Area has learned.

This was all expected once COVID-19 shut the sport down, as the Giants want Clark and the 2010 team to be honored in front of a packed house. It's hard to even reschedule those events at the moment, as it's unclear if fans will be allowed at games during the 2021 season.

The Giants planned to retire Clark's No. 22 on July 11. They were going to hold a pre-game ceremony to honor the first baseman, one of the most popular players in franchise history. The 10th anniversary of the 2010 title was going to be celebrated Aug. 16 with a team reunion. The Giants also had intended to give out Mike Yastrzemski bobbleheads and Johnny Cueto gnomes this season, but those will have to wait.

Team officials originally hoped to be back at Oracle Park right now preparing for Opening Day in early July, but ongoing talks between the owners and players have delayed the start of the season, and there now is concern throughout the game about COVID-19. Several players and staffers were tested late last week after a player came down with symptoms.

In an alternate universe, the Giants would be starting one of the season's best homestands this week. The New York Mets were supposed to visit for a four-game series, followed by a weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
