The surgery is set to take place the first week of September.

Sandoval has been on the injured list since Aug. 9 as he dealt with inflammation in his elbow.

Sandoval has been dealing with bone chips in his right elbow since 2011, and had a cortisone shot on Aug. 11 to try to relieve the pain.

News of the surgery is a devastating blow for Sandoval, who had turned his career around and became one of the Giants' most reliable hitters this season. In 107 games, Sandoval slashed .269/.314/.509 with 23 doubles, 14 homers and 41 RBI.

While the surgery could keep Sandoval out for the entire 2020 season, there is one bit of hope. Early last September, the Angels announced that two-way star Shohei Ohtani needed Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. While Ohtani hasn't been able to pitch, he has served as the Angels' designated hitter this season.

So, if Sandoval's recovery goes well, it's possible that the impending free agent could serve as a DH for an AL team or a pinch-hitter for a NL team.
