Will Wilson didn't want to get his hopes up.
Several selections before the Giants were on the clock with the No. 13 pick in the 2020 MLB draft, his wife, Tori, received a text from Patrick Bailey's fiance, Leigha, that said Patrick was going to be a Giant. Wilson, the Giants' No. 10 prospect, was teammates with Bailey for two years at North Carolina State.
Wilson has been through the draft process before, though. He knows anything can happen. The shortstop was drafted No. 15 overall by the Los Angeles Angels last year, and then traded to San Francisco at the Winter Meetings.

Once the Giants made the Bailey news official, Wilson was both ecstatic and surprised.
“When he got picked, I was like, ‘this is insane,' " Wilson told Sports Illustrated's Brett Friedlander. “I was shocked at the same time, because they had never asked me anything about him.
"Usually teams will ask if you know a guy and they never really asked me about Patrick. And then they picked him. I texted Patrick right away and was like, ‘you better answer my call.’ It was pretty sick to see him come to us."

Wilson expressed his happiness on Twitter shortly after the Giants drafted his former teammate in the first round.
To make matters even greater for Wilson and Bailey, the Giants added another member of the Wolfpack early the next day. San Francisco used its Madison Bumgarner compensation pick at No. 67 to take left-hander Nick Swiney.
Wilson has high praise for Swiney, too.

"I knew the Giants loved him and we needed left-handed pitching after losing Madison, but seeing him come to us was a shock," Wilson said. "Not to comp him to anybody, especially Madison, but Nick has an offspeed that could be in the big league's right now."

Swiney went 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his shortened junior season this year. Bailey, his battery mate, hit six homers in just 17 games. And Wilson hit .275 with five long balls last season in Rookie Ball.
Wilson certainly wants to impress the Giants when he can get back on the field, and he already is dreaming about being teammates with Bailey and Swiney once again.
"I was telling Patrick that just because I'm a year ahead of them, I don't want to be playing a step ahead," Wilson said. "I'm like, can they come up? Could I go down? I like playing with those guys. It's fun to play with guys, you know? I think it helps you compete a little bit better.
"Hopefully we get the opportunity to do it for a while."
