Solano expected to miss 7-10 days after positive COVID-19 test

Manager Gabe Kapler spoke to reporters after the Giants’ 3-2 win over the Mets, and said that infielder Donovan Solano was placed on the IL after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Giants made two roster moves ahead of Thursday's 3-2 win over the New York Mets at Citi Field. One was expected. One was not.

Chadwick Tromp was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to correspond with Brandon Belt being placed on the Bereavement List following the death of his grandmother earlier in the week. But Thairo Estrada also was recalled to the big leagues, while Donovan Solano was placed on the Injured List without designation.

After the Giants completed the sweep of the Mets, manager Gabe Kapler clarified as to why.

"Donovan came in today, had some cold-like symptoms," Kapler told reporters via videoconference. "We tested him for COVID-19 and he tested positive for COVID-19, and that's why we placed him on the IL."

Solano is expected to miss seven to 10 days. He must stay in New York to quarantine while the Giants head to Atlanta to continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Braves. Hitting coach Justin Viele was the only other member of the organization to test positive through contact tracing, but he subsequently tested negative.

This all transpired shortly before game time. Though the Giants got the win, Kapler indicated it had been a tough ordeal for the team.

"Today wasn't the easiest day getting the Donovan Solano news," Kapler said. "What I'd say about Donovan is, he's as careful as anybody. He's devoted to protecting his family and his teammates, and protecting himself as well. He takes really good care of himself. You're going to be disappointed if anybody tests positive for the virus, but in particular, I feel for Donovan and I feel for us, because we really miss him when he's not around."

The Giants are six games into their most demanding physical stretch of the season. There's a strong chance they'll be without Solano for the remainder of it.
