SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have gotten some good results from left-handed reliever Alex Young, but they're still in need of help from that side of their bullpen and on Wednesday they potentially added another option.
Left-handed pitcher Andrew Vasquez was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies and assigned to Triple-A Sacramento. To clear a 40-man roster spot, the Giants DFA'd outfielder Steele Walker, who was claimed from the Texas Rangers 10 days ago. Walker had played in five games for the River Cats and gone 3-for-18 with one homer.
Vasquez, 28, has made 21 big league appearances over four years for the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. Nine of them came earlier this year with Toronto, but he allowed six runs in 6 2/3 innings. Vasquez had made four appearances for the Triple-A affiliate of the Phillies but he was designated on Monday.

The Giants currently have Young, Jarlin Garcia and Thomas Szapucki in their big league bullpen but left-handed relief has been a major issue this year.

They expect to get Jose Alvarez back at some point before the end of the season and Sam Long is at Triple-A getting stretched out as a starting option. Vasquez adds another layer of depth for the stretch run.
