Giants add bullpen arm with history of Oracle Park dominance

On the latest Giants Talk, Farhan Zaidi opens up about how the Giants are trying to operate their organization and why he feels the national media has been underestimating them throughout the past year.

Tyler Chatwood has long been a thorn in the Giants' side. For years he would come in with a Colorado Rockies pitching staff with some much bigger names on it and be the one who would end up dominating the Giants.

The Giants are hoping Chatwood still likes pitching at Oracle Park and can turn the tables on their opponents.

The veteran right-hander had his contract purchased from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, taking Jay Jackson's roster spot. Jackson was optioned back to Triple-A and the Giants also put Tyler Beede (lower back strain) on the 60-day IL to open up a 40-man roster spot for Chatwood.

Chatwood, 31, made 30 relief appearances for the Blue Jays this year and posted a 5.46 ERA, but there were reasons for optimism. His FIP was 3.82 and he struck out 32 batters in 28 innings while allowing just one homer. Chatwood did walk 20 batters, something that has been an issue throughout his career.

Chatwood missed some time with a neck strain in Toronto and was DFA'd on trade deadline day. The Giants scooped him up as part of a push to add veteran pitching to their Triple-A roster, and Chatwood has become the first of that group to get back to the big leagues. He figures to have a role similar to the one that had been occupied by Jackson, who was dominant in his first six outings but allowed runs in four of his past nine.

The Beede move opened up a roster spot, but also ended the season for a former first-rounder who was supposed to help the Giants in the second half. Beede spent the beginning of the year recovering from Tommy John surgery and ended up making just one relief appearance for the Giants. He had struggled with his command in 16 minor league starts.

The Giants hoped Beede could give them a boost down the stretch, but they now will take a look at another Tyler. Chatwood should feel right at home; he has a 2.04 ERA in nine career appearances at Oracle Park and threw a shutout here in 2017.
