Conforto says failed Giants-Correa deal didn't impact decision

With Carlos Correa finalizing a deal with the Twins, new Giants outfielder Michael Conforto shared his perspective on how the Correa-Giants saga worked itself out.

The Carlos Correa saga has affected almost every aspect of MLB.

However, for Michael Conforto, the strange situation had no bearing on his decision to sign with the Giants.

"I think when things really started to heat up with me and the Giants, it was right around the time that things fell through," Conforto told reporters Tuesday in his introductory Zoom call. "I knew I wanted to be with the Giants and it was intriguing that Carlos was in agreement with the team."

Both Conforto and Correa share the same agent, Scott Boras. And though Conforto was able to finalize his two-year, $36 million contract with the Giants after passing a physical, the same can't be said for Correa.

Initially agreeing to a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants, the deal fell apart after San Francisco raised concerns about Correa's surgically repaired right ankle. About 15 hours later, Correa agreed to a 12-year, $315 million contract with the New York Mets.

After the Mets shared the same concerns about the ankle injury he sustained in 2014 while in the minors, Correa and Boras pivoted to the Minnesota Twins -- the team he played for in 2022. Correa quickly agreed to a six-year, $200 million contract that can max out at $270 million with vesting options for four extra years.

The agreement with the Twins is pending a physical, of course. It's important to note that Correa passed on the Twins' initial offer of 10 years, $285 million when he agreed to the deal with the Giants.

With the Correa saga seemingly over, Conforto nevertheless is ready to play with San Francisco despite the shortstop returning to Minnesota.

"You always want to play with a great player but I'm extremely excited," Conforto continued. "I think we have a great team either way."

Conforto also reiterated he couldn't be happier to be in San Francisco and that the Correa deal had no impact on his decision.

"It doesn't have much consequence to me ... best of luck to him and to his family and hopefully, it's a great situation for him," Conforto concluded.

With or without Correa, Conforto is looking to have a bounce-back year with the Giants after missing the entire 2022 season with a shoulder injury.

Now that Conforto is with San Francisco, Giants fans hope he can be a major piece in helping the team win another World Series title.
