Tromp announces he will be back for second season with Giants

As a rookie, Chadwick Tromp showed a little pop, good defensive skills and the kind of enthusiasm that was often hard to find in a shortened season played during a pandemic. That last trait was on full display Tuesday as Tromp happily announced he'll be back with the Giants for a second season.

Tromp had been released last week ahead of the non-tender deadline but it was expected that he would return. He broke the news himself on Twitter.

A source confirmed the reunion, although it's not yet clear if it's a minor league or major league deal. Tromp, 25, made 24 appearances for the Giants in his first big league season. He split time with Tyler Heineman early on and then stuck around as Joey Bart's backup late in the year, earning consistent time as he became Johnny Cueto's personal catcher.

Tromp hit .213 with four homers and a double. He generally got good reviews for his defense and rated well by pitch-framing metrics.

Tromp currently might be the most likely catcher to back up Buster Posey on opening day next season. President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has said the Giants would like Bart to get more time to develop, and the plan is for the top prospect to start the year in Triple-A and play every day.

The Giants do not currently have another catcher on the 40-man roster or in the upper minors, although they're sure to bring one or two more to camp as non-roster invitees and Zaidi has said he might add a veteran to the mix. Heineman signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and Aramis Garcia was claimed by the Texas Rangers.
