The A's pitching staff has been riddled with bad news as of late -- and a bright light that had given them some hope suffered yet another setback.
MLB.com's Martín Gallegos reported on Sunday that lefty Sean Manaea was scheduled to make a rehab appearance on Tuesday, but Gallegos later reported that the lefty will not make that appearance due to soreness in his right side. Manaea told Gallegos he doesn't believe it to be anything serious, however.
“He’s got a little bit of a side soreness, so we’re shutting him down for a little bit,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said via Gallegos. “I don’t know if it’s an oblique or if he’s just feeling it a little bit in his side. We’re cutting back on him for a little bit here to get healthy. It’s not the arm, which is good.”

Manaea is well on his way coming off left shoulder surgery that took place last September to take care of a torn labrum. On Thursday, he threw 60 pitches in a simulated game in Arizona at the A's minor league complex in Arizona. Naturally, he's eager to pitch in a real game.
Melvin and the staff are making sure to take the best actions in ensuring he's on the right track.
The latest tidbit is on the heels of promising young arm Frankie Montas' 80-game suspension after violating MLB's performance-enhancing drug policy and Blake Treinen being placed on the injured list with a "mild shoulder issue."

There is a bit of good news, though.
Young arm Jesús Luzardo threw for Triple-A Vegas on Saturday night in a rehab start. In 3 1/3 innings, he had five strikeouts, two walks and gave up five hits. He's also making his way back along with the A's No. 2 prospect A.J. Puk. who is expected to pitch in a bullpen role. The 24-year-old will be on an innings limit following Tommy John surgery.
