A's Khris Davis leaves game vs. Pirates with left hip contusion

The A's had always feared this could happen, and their worst nightmares came true Sunday with Khris Davis roaming left field in a National League park.

Davis left Sunday's game in Pittsburgh with a left hip contusion after making a great catch in foul territory and slamming hard into the railing with the left side of his body.

Davis, 31, initially stayed in the game after robbing the Pirates' Adam Frazier in the first inning. But when the A's took the field in the bottom of the second, Chad Pinder took over in left field.

Manager Bob Melvin announced after the game that Davis was day-to-day and would be re-evaluated after the team's off day.

Davis led MLB with 48 home runs last season and his 143 homers since 2016 also lead baseball. This season, he is hitting .229/.303/.481 with a team-high 10 home runs and 26 RBI, though he hasn't hit a long ball since April 12.

Davis recently signed a two-year, $33.5 million contract extension that will keep in Oakland through the 2021 season. If he is forced to miss any time, it would be a crushing blow to the middle of the A's lineup.

Davis has only been on the disabled list one time in his three-plus seasons in Oakland. Last year, he missed nine games with a strained right groin, but he still ended up playing 151 games. He has played 150 games in all three of his seasons with the A's.
