DeMeco Ryans and Mike McDaniel are in line for promotions within the 49ers’ coaching staff.
Ryans is expected to replace Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator and McDaniel is the top candidate to receive the title of offensive coordinator, a league source told NBC Sports Bay Area on Friday morning.
Ryans was considered the top on-staff candidate to run the 49ers’ defense in the likelihood Saleh became an NFL head coach. The New York Jets agreed in principle on Thursday night to hire Saleh as their head coach.

“It's only a matter of time before DeMeco is a coordinator in this league,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said last week. “It's a matter of time before DeMeco will be a head coach.”
Ryans, 36, played 10 NFL seasons with Houston and Philadelphia in a career that ended in 2015. He joined the 49ers in 2017 as a quality control coach. He was promoted the next year to linebackers coach, a role in which he helped develop All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner and 2019 fifth-round draft pick Dre Greenlaw.
Saleh will take former 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur with him to run the Jets’ offense, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area.
McDaniel, 37, the 49ers’ run game coordinator, was seen as a candidate for some of the offensive coordinator positions around the league. But he is in line to remain with the 49ers as Shanahan’s top offensive assistant, the source said.

Shanahan is not likely to relinquish play-calling duties, but McDaniel could take on more responsibility with the departure of LaFleur.

McDaniel, who played college football at Yale, began his coaching career in 2005 as an intern with the Denver Broncos under head coach Mike Shanahan. He joined then-offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan with the Houston Texans for three seasons.
Then, McDaniel served as running backs coach for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League for two seasons before he rejoined Kyle Shanahan with Washington, Cleveland, Atlanta and the 49ers.
