Last January, Jim Tomsula signed a four-year deal to become the head coach of the 49ers. He didn't make it to Year 2.
Late in the season, rumors began circulating about Tomsula's job status.

"You see all this stuff leaking out, it's like 'Uh oh. What's going on?' Torrey Smith told 95.7 The Game on Wednesday morning. "I've never been around that either. You see that happen and it's like, 'Wait a minute. What's going on?'
"But any time you don't make the playoffs, especially with the expectations that are set around here, you can be on the hot seat. And that goes for players as well."

Smith signed a five-year, $40 million deal with the 49ers last March.

It was a frustrating first campaign in San Francisco, as Smith registered career-lows in catches (33), yards (663) and touchdowns (4).
"I have very high expectations for myself. It's no secret that this year was very disappointing. But I didn't really have the ball as much as I'm used to either ... I feel like if I'm used more, and I'm incorporated into the game, then I'll do what I'm supposed to do."
So what went wrong?
Smith defended Tomsula, saying that it's up to the players to go onto the field and execute.
"It starts with us not playing well," Smith explained. "At the end of the day, Tomsula's not out there tackling, or dropping back, or blocking, or catching the ball. We just didn't do a very good job ... coaching is a part of it sometimes ... at the end of the day, it comes down to players making plays...
"I have all the love in the world for Jim Tomsula. One of the best coaches, one of my favorite coaches I've ever played for. I have a lot of love for Trent (Baalke), too. He's one of the reasons why I'm here as well. Geep Chryst, all those guys ... at the end of the day it's a business ... that's just the nature of the business."
