With Robert Saleh agreeing to become the Jets’ new head coach, will Kyle Shannahan look to promote from within and hire DeMeco Ryans as his new defensive coordinator?

The 49ers will have a new defensive coordinator next season.

The New York Jets have agreed in principle to hire 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as their next head coach, the Jets announced Thursday night. This will be Saleh's first head-coaching job in the professional or collegiate ranks.

Saleh's agreement with the Jets is a five-year contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday night.

Schefter also reported that Saleh is expected to take 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur with him to New York to be the Jets' offensive coordinator.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday, citing sources, that the 49ers are expected to promote linebackers coach DeMeco Ryans to defensive coordinator.

Saleh, 41, joined the 49ers as their defensive coordinator in 2017 when Kyle Shanahan was head coach. He oversaw the defense's transformation into one of the most elite in the NFL, peaking with the 49ers' run to Super Bowl LIV last season.

This past season might've been Saleh's best in Santa Clara, however. The 49ers allowed the fifth-fewest total yards per game (314.4), the fourth-fewest passing yards (207.9) and the eighth-fewest rushing yards (106.4), despite losing a number of starters to injury throughout the season.
