Nick Mullens throws two TD passes on first two drives of 49ers career

Nick Mullens made 49ers history on the first two drives of his career.

The second-year pro became the first San Francisco quarterback to throw two touchdown passes in his NFL debut. And he needed just 10 minutes and 7 seconds to do it Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders.

Mullens marched the 49ers 75 yards down the field in six plays on his first drive, and ultimately connected a wide-open Pierre Garçon for the first TD of Mullens' career. It also was Garçon's first score since joining the 49ers last season.

The score gave the 49ers a 7-3 lead over the Raiders. After his defense forced a three-and-out, Mullens led the 49ers on a 13-play, 66-yard drive. He finished it off with a 4-yard pass to Kendrick Bourne on third-and-goal.

Thursday marked the first time since 2016 that the 49ers scored touchdowns on their first two drives. It also was the first time since 2013 that the Raiders gave up passing touchdowns on the first two drives, and the QB to do it puts Mullens in elite company.

Mullens couldn't keep it going on the third drive, and the 49ers were forced to punt. Still, it was one heck of a first half for the young QB from Southern Miss.
