The 49ers missed out on a trade for star receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but they are adding a much-needed pass-rusher.
The 49ers on Thursday acquire defensive end Dee Ford from the Chiefs and give him a new five-year contract, the club announced.
The 49ers agreed to send a 2020 second-round pick to Kansas City for Ford, whom the Chiefs tagged as their franchise player earlier this offseason.

Ford, 27, is a five-year pro who is coming off a 13-sack season for Kansas City. He has 30.5 sacks in his 67-game career after being a first-round selection (No. 23 overall) of Kansas City from Auburn in 2014.
The 49ers have struggled to find an outside pass rush in recent seasons, and Ford fills a gaping need on the team's defensive line. The 49ers also own the No. 2 overall pick in next month's draft, and the club could be eyeing Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa.
Ford recorded one sack in Kansas City's 38-27 victory over the 49ers in Week 3.
The one-year franchise tag is set to pay Ford $15.443 million for the 2019 season. The 49ers worked out a new multi-year contract for Ford in order for the deal to be completed.

The Cleveland Browns outbid the 49ers for Beckham, reportedly sending the No. 17 overall pick, a third-round selection (No. 95 overall) and safety Jabril Peppers to the Giants.
The 49ers likely were not willing to give up the No. 2 overall pick as part of the deal to land Beckham. The Giants also were able to fill a need at safety with the acquisition of Peppers. Giants Pro Bowl safety Landon Collins agreed to terms on a six-year, $84 million deal with Washington on Monday.
