The dust is settling in the 49ers quarterback room as Jimmy Garoppolo is named number two on the depth chart with the 49ers keeping Brock Purdy as well ahead of Week 1 against the Bears.

While not nearly as significant as the quarterback news that came from the 49ers one day earlier, general manager John Lynch on Tuesday announced rookie Brock Purdy earned his way onto the team’s 53-man roster to open the season.

Purdy will take his spot as No. 3 on the 49ers’ quarterback depth chart behind starter Trey Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy, whom the 49ers chose with the 262nd and final selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, had beaten out veteran Nate Sudfeld for a spot on the team.

“Credit to Brock, how Brock played in the preseason,” Shanahan said. “I thought he was going to be on our practice squad because we were real happy with Nate. But Brock won that job.”

Purdy showed consistency since his arrival with the 49ers after being a four-year starter at Iowa State. If the 49ers had not managed to retain Garoppolo, Purdy would have started the season as Lance’s backup.

“And we were going to go into the year with him as the No. 2,” Shanahan said. “And we were good with that because that’s what he earned.”
