Nick Mullens sustained a major elbow injury so C.J. Beathard will start for the 49ers on Saturday. Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be ready to play so the 49ers are in search of a backup QB.

The 49ers on Thursday signed rookie wide receiver Matt Cole off the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.

Cole is under contract to the 49ers through next season.

As a senior at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, Cole caught 43 passes for 939 yards and 12 touchdowns. He signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie. After he was waived on Sept. 5, he was re-signed to the Dolphins' practice squad.

Cole (5-foot-10, 197 pounds) is a slot receiver who has a chance to stick with the 49ers beyond this season. Trent Taylor, who began the season as the 49ers' top slot receiver, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

Taylor this week went on the NFL's reserve/COVID-19 list.
