49ers rookie camp notes: John Lynch denies rift with Kyle Shanahan

SANTA CLARA -- General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan were alone together in the middle of the 49ers' practice field as those participating in the team's rookie minicamp went through stretching exercises.

Before practice, all eyes were on Lynch and Shanahan, who showed no signs of the friction that Matt Miller of Bleacher Report wrote about this week.

Earlier this week, Shanahan responded to a text from NBC Sports Bay Area, calling the report "complete bulls--t."

Lynch also forcefully denied there are any issues atop the 49ers organization during a radio interview on 95.7 The Game.

“The notion we’re not working together couldn’t be further from the truth,” Lynch said. “We have a tremendous working relationship. We’re great friends off field. There’s a lot of trust. We came into this together knowing there’d be tough times and it wouldn’t be easy, but it would be worth it.

“I can tell Niner fans that, hey, we’re as strong as ever and there’s a lot of trust and faith. I feel so great for this organization that they have Kyle Shanahan, a tremendous leader, tremendous mind."

The 49ers held a non-padded workout Friday to open their rookie minicamp on Friday. Here are some on-the-field observations from the team's 90-minute practice:

NFL rumors: 49ers had Damon Arnette Jr. interest before Texans contract

-- Defensive end Nick Bosa, the 49ers No. 2 overall draft pick, did not take part in 11-on-11 work, as the team wants to ease him back into football shape. The thing that stood out in the individual and one-on-one drills is his technical side, including his hands use. Tackle Justin Skule, a sixth-round draft pick, more than held his own against Bosa when they were matched up.

-- New 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek is full of energy. He is loud, intense and decidedly not G-rated. Kocurek replaced Jeff Zgnonia, who was fired. Kocurek spent last year with the Miami Dolphins after nine years with the Detroit Lions.

-- Second-round pick Deebo Samuel routinely got open quickly and made catches in one-on-one drills against the coverage of seventh-round pick Tim Harris. In a team drill, Samuel made a nice finger-tip catch of a pass from Layton Rabb, a tryout quarterback from Midwestern State.

-- Samuel and Malik Henry fielded punts from Mitch Wishnowsky. Samuel struggled with the wind on the practice field, muffing a couple of the kicks.

-- UCLA quarterback Wilton Speight looks the part. At 6-foot-5 5/8, Speight has an NFL body and the ball comes out of his hand nicely. His final two years of college were interrupted due to injuries, including a cracked vertebrae in his back in 2017 while playing for Jim Harbaught at Michigan. Shane Day, the 49ers' quarterbacks coach, worked him out in Southern California and remained in contact throughout the draft process. Speight chose to sign with the 49ers over the L.A. Rams and Tampa Bay.

-- Undrafted receiver Shawn Poindexter stood out in one-on-one drills. The 6-5 Arizona product got deep twice to haul in deep passes from Speight. He created good separation on a variety of routes. He dropped one pass on a slant when he did not turn to the look for the ball quick enough.

-- Tight end Tyree Mayfield made a one-handed catch of a high pass from Rabb against the coverage of tryout linebacker Ketner Kupp of Eastern Washington. Mayfield, who took a pre-draft visit to meet with the 49ers, was one of 10 undrafted rookies to sign with the club on Friday.

-- Linebacker Hayes Pullard of USC came up with an interception of a pass from Speight.
