49ers' Jimmie Ward fractures collarbone, expected to miss 8 to 12 weeks

The injuries are piling up in droves for the 49ers. After first-round draft pick Nick Bosa hurt his hamstring Wednesday, safety Jimmie Ward suffered a fractured collarbone during Thursday's practice.

The standard recovery time for the injury is 8-12 weeks.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Ward will undergo surgery Friday, and NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported that the 49ers safety was injured diving for a ball during OTAs on Thursday.

Ward, who was operating as the first-string free safety, has been placed on Injured Reserve four out of the last five seasons.

A favorite of the 49ers coaching staff, Ward signed a one-year, $5 million contract back in March. He was San Francisco's first-round pick in 2014.
