49ers add physicality, versatility to secondary with CB Womack

SANTA CLARA -- Toledo product Samuel Womack is bringing his aggressive style to the 49ers' secondary.

The former Rocket appeared in 53 games over five seasons in his college career and recorded 126 tackles -- 87 solo and 4.5 for loss. But his 39 pass break ups are the most impressive stat.

Womack believes versatility is one of his best qualities, and he is ready to put it to use for the 49ers after being selected at No. 172 in the fifth round.

“I’m a lockdown press corner, in your face, but I’m good outside,” Womack said on Saturday.  “I’m a man corner overall. I improved in my zone to fulfill my all-around coverage. I’m physical, too. I like to get hands-on. I like to tackle. I like to do it all.”

Womack shared that the 49ers were in contact throughout the pre-draft process, with calls from scouts and even a run in with John Lynch during Toledo’s appearance in the Bahamas Bowl. The defensive back is familiar with the club's scheme of playing man and Cover 3 and 4.

The 49ers are looking to find someone to take the place of K’Waun Williams, who signed with the Denver Broncos during free agency. The departed nickelback not only covered the inside, but was called upon to blitz the quarterback.

Womack is comfortable in a blitz package having experience from his time at Toledo, but also knows he will need to earn his spot while contributing on special teams.

Another aspect that will facilitate Womack’s adjustment to Santa Clara is a familiar face. The Toledo prospect and Ambry Thomas were rivals in high school, and the two have kept in touch since the Michigan product was drafted by the team.

Until the two former rivals reunite in the Bay Area, Womack will just enjoy the moment with his family. He shared that the experience has been unlike anything else.

“This journey and this road that I’ve been on getting to this moment, it just was so surreal,” Womack said. “Really couldn’t believe it. When I got the call, I knew the area code, so I knew what team it was coming from when I got the call ... it was just so surreal.

“Once a saw my name on the board, seeing my family light up right with me, it was just an amazing moment that I can’t take away.”
