49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said the team plans to open Christian McCaffrey’s (Achilles) 21-day return window next week.

Shanahan said McCaffrey is going to “hit hit hard” this week and run through some simulated practices during the team’s bye week. It’s been reported for weeks that Week 10 looks like the targeted return day for McCaffrey. The team’s decision to open his return window next Monday is another step toward that, but the team could still hold him out through Week 12 if they determined he was not yet ready to return to the field. We’ll see how things go once the Niners return from their bye, but they’re clearly laying the groundwork for his return.
Tee Higgins

CIN Wide Receiver #5

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Tee Higgins (quad) is “day to day.”

Helpful update, Zac. Higgins will be worth monitoring ahead of Week 9’s game against the Raiders. Injury reports will have to do the majority of the coloring for us as Taylor hasn’t exactly given much to go with again. Higgins did not play in Week 8 as a game-time decision, though he was reportedly “feeling better” on Saturday night. We’d expect him to see the practice field at some point this week to at least test out the quadriceps.
Anthony Richardson

IND Quarterback #5

Asked if Anthony Richardson would start in Week 9, Colts coach Shane Steichen said “we’re evaluating everything.”

Between every former player in the NFL (and some in his locker room) criticizing him for tapping out for a play in Indianapolis’ loss to Houston and a miserable 10-of-32, 175-yard performance, there would seem to be a line of thought for benching Richardson this week. Joe Flacco has looked capable as a backup, but no matter who starts, Minnesota’s defense has been threatening enough to keep them out of a fantasy QB1 conversation. Richardson has completed a league-low 44.4 percent of his passes this year for 958 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Derek Carr

NO Quarterback #4

Saints coach Dennis Allen said Derek Carr (oblique) will practice on Wednesday and that he is “optimistic” Carr will play on Sunday.

Carr has missed the last three weeks with the oblique issue, and his return will be a big boost for a flailing Saints outfit that has dropped six in a row. The good news? The Panthers are up next and Carr has already torched them once this season, and New Orleans has generally gotten healthier on offense over the last two weeks. Carr will be a borderline QB1 against a Panthers defense that is one of the worst in the NFL.
Diontae Johnson

CAR Wide Receiver #5

Speaking on The Pat McAfee show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said he thinks Diontae Johnson will be traded before the deadline.

The exact quote from Schefter was, “In my mind, Diontae Johnson and [Browns LB] Za’Darius Smith are gonna be traded before the deadline.” The NFL trade deadline has been pushed back to November 5th, giving teams an extra week to decide the directions they want to go in, but Johnson (ribs) did not play in the Panthers’ Week 8 loss and could be held out again in Week 9, even if he is healthy enough to play. There are several teams who could benefit from acquiring Johnson, who has caught 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns this season in seven games. Is ability to command targets was on full display once Andy Dalton took over under center for the Panthers, and with Johnson unlikely to re-up with the team this offseason, a trade would make the most sense for both sides.
Jordan Love

GB Quarterback #10

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Jordan Love’s groin injury is believed to be minor, but his availability for Week 9 against the Lions could be in doubt.

It’s still early, but the Packers have Week 9’s game against the Lions, followed by a Week 10 bye. The extra time off would give Love a little more than two weeks to recover in time for the team’s second-half push into the postseason, and Malik Willis has been solid in his relief of Love thus far. This situation will be one to monitor all week, but it would not be surprising if Love was held out of next week’s contest.
Christian McCaffrey

SF Running Back #23

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Christian McCaffrey is still on pace to return in Week 10 against the Buccaneers.

The 49ers now head into their Week 9 bye, but per Rapoport, McCaffrey is expected to participate in a “bonus practice” the team is holding during its bye. He also notes that McCaffrey is still “ramping up” for his return to the field. It’s all very familiar territory at this point, as this has long been rumored as the return date for CMC if all goes well. With Jordan Mason again dealing with a shoulder injury, McCaffrey’s return becomes all the more vital for the Niners.
George Kittle

SF Tight End #85

George Kittle caught 6-of-7 targets for 128 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ Week 8 win over the Cowboys.

Kittle did his heavy lifting through the first three quarters, scoring from two yards out in a third quarter dominated by the 49ers after the team failed to find the end zone in the first half. He would not be targeted the rest of the way with the 49ers nursing a lead eventually threatened by the Cowboys during a feverish comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, ultimately escaping with a win to send them into their bye at 4-4 in the most crowded division in football. All four teams in the NFC West are separated by just 0.5 games as we enter the back stretch.
Isaac Guerendo

SF Running Back #31

Isaac Guerendo rushed 14 times for 85 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ Week 8 win over the Cowboys, adding 17 yards on three receptions.

Jordan Mason departed the game with just over two minutes remaining in the first half, paving the way for the electric rookie running back to amass more than 100 yards from scrimmage and find the end zone for the first time in his young career. That now marks two consecutive games that Mason was unable to finish, each time departing with a shoulder injury. Even so, the 49ers head to their bye week in Week 9 and could get either, or both of, Mason and Christian McCaffrey back following the break.
Brock Purdy

SF Quarterback #13

Brock Purdy completed 18-of-26 passes for 260 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers’ 30-24, Week 8 victory over the Cowboys, adding 56 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

Seven of Purdy’s eight carries came on scrambles as he consistently kept drives alive with his legs, a much needed offensive spark considering both Jordan Mason and Deebo Samuel failed to finish the game with injuries. Purdy’s lone touchdown pass went to tight end George Kittle in a third quarter dominated by the 49ers. After entering the break down 10-6, San Francisco rattled off three consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter to take a commanding 27-10 lead into the final frame, ultimately enough to hold off a ferocious comeback attempt from the Cowboys. The 49ers improve to 4-4 and find themselves tied with the Cardinals atop the surprisingly tight NFC West, a division with all four teams within 0.5 games of each other. San Francisco heads to their bye week in Week 9 before traveling to Tampa to face the Buccaneers.
