  • BUF Running Back #4
Cook missed Wednesday’s practice as well. The Bills play on Monday Night Football, giving him an extra day to get back on the field, but a DNP for the first official practice of the week is not a good sign. Ty Johnson has played a role on passing downs with Cook healthy and would likely see more work on the ground if he can’t suit up. Rookie Ray Davis is also waiting in the wings. Davis would presumably be the team’s primary option on early downs, though he will top out as a risky RB3 if Cook is ruled out.
  • NYG Wide Receiver #1
Duggan is only privy to the portion of practice open to the media, but it’s still a bad sign for the rookie receiver. Nabers will go down as a DNP when the Giants release their injury report for today. Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters it would be hard for Nabers to clear the league’s concussion protocol if he doesn’t practice on Friday. All signs point to Nabers missing another week with the brain injury. Darius Slayton stepped up with eight catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in Week 5. He would presumably be the team’s top receiver once again if Nabers sits. Slayton is worth an add as a potential WR4 in all fantasy formats.
  • NE Running Back #38
Stevenson was not spotted during the portion of practice open to the media, though he could technically return for a limited session later in practice. After missing Wednesday’s practice as well, that looks unlikely. Stevenson is dealing with a foot injury he suffered in Week 5. He initially called it a calf issue but the Pats listed him with a foot injury on their practice report. If he can’t suit up this week, Antonio Gibson, who got the start last week, would be in line for a sizable workload.
  • HOU Running Back #28
Mixon was seen at Houston practice for the first time in almost two weeks after possibly suffering a setback to the ankle injury he picked up in Week 2. Even a couple limited practices to end the week would likely put Mixon on track to start in Week 6 against the Patriots. Cam Akers could mix in if Mixon is not 100 percent recovered from his injury.
  • JAX Running Back #1
Pederson dismissed questions about whether Tank Bigsby, with his 101-yard, two-touchdown Week 5 performance against the Colts, had taken over as Jacksonville’s lead back. “Travis is our guy. Tank had a good game. That’s just the way games go,” Pederson said. “Happy for Tank. Great for the offensive line, obviously, in some of those situations there. Travis is our guy.” Etienne, meanwhile, has struggled with a lingering shoulder injury. Etienne told reporters this week he would “find ways to continue to push through” the discomfort of the shoulder ailment. It’s hard to believe Bigsby, the most efficient running back in the NFL this season, won’t take on the early-down role while Etienne continues as the team’s pass catching back. In Week 6 they’ll take on a Bears defense that ranks 17th in rush EPA.
  • NYJ Coaching Staff
A longtime ally of Aaron Rodgers, Hackett’s play calling and scheming has once again failed to produce. Rodgers, according to SNY TV’s Connor Hughes, is “on board” with the switch to Downing following a miserable start to the season for New York’s offense. The Jets through Week 5 are 18th in yards per play (4.5), 22nd in first downs, and 24th in EPA per play. They have used pre-snap motion at one of the lowest rates in the NFL. Downing was most recently offensive coordinator for the Titans from 2021 to 2022. In his final season in Tennessee, Downing’s Titans offense ranked 26th in points and 29th in yards.
  • SF Running Back #24
Mason has been invisible as a pass catcher while working as the Niners’ lead back over the past five weeks with Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) sidelined. Mason has run a pass route on about 60 percent of the team’s drop backs and has seen a target on just 7 percent of his routes. “Some running backs ... have quickly created that connection [with the quarterback],” Barrows said. “I’d say Mason is building that connection.” Unless or until Mason is more involved in the pass game, he’ll be game script sensitive.
  • PIT Quarterback #3
Schefter said on ESPN’s “Get Up” that head coach Mike Tomlin has not “crowned” Justin Fields as the team’s full-time starter despite a solid start to the season. Schefter suggested Tomlin could make the quarterback switch if the Steelers — who have dropped two straight games — lose to the miserable Raiders in Week 6. Wilson, Schefter said, is “within an arm’s length” of Fields as the Steelers’ starter. A poor outing for Fields, who completed just 55 percent of his throws last week against Dallas, and Wilson could end up under center for Pittsburgh.
  • LAC Quarterback #10
Herbert played through a high-ankle sprain in Week 4 with disastrous results. He struggled to move around the pocket and threw for 179 yards plus one touchdown en route to a 10-point performance from the entire offense. LA lost to the Chiefs by seven points. The Chargers’ Week 5 bye should help Herbert get back on his feet for their upcoming matchup with Denver. LA’s run-heavy approach will keep him in the QB2 ranks.
  • IND Wide Receiver #11
Pittman was added to the injury report as a DNP on Wednesday. He dealt with a back injury earlier in the season but it never cost him any games. It’s a shocking development and one of a slew of injuries hitting the Colts’ offense. Josh Downs, who would be in line to take over No. 1 receiver duties in Pittman’s absence, missed Wednesday’s practice with a toe injury. He will leap into the WR2 ranks if healthy. Adonai Mitchell will re-enter the three-receiver rotation going forward while Alec Pierce’s contributions as a deep threat will be even more valuable in the coming weeks.
