Mike Florio says that the New York Jets’ dysfunction, most recently on display with the team’s decision to fire Robert Saleh, starts with their owner Woody Johnson.
There’s a big shakeup in this week’s CFP projections. Alabama’s out, and Indiana and Boise State hop in.

  • PIT Running Back #30
Warren is likely to be sidelined once again as he recovers from a knee injury he suffered in Week 3. It could still be a few weeks before Warren returns to the lineup, and even then, his workload could be limited. Najee Harris will continue operating as the lead back in the massively run heavy Pittsburgh offense.
  • PIT Wide Receiver #14
Pickens plays just 57 percent of the team’s snaps in last week’s loss to the Cowboys and ran a pass route on 20 of the Steelers’ 31 drop backs. Pickens had three catches for 26 yards and appeared disinterested throughout. Tomlin is almost certainly providing cover for the Steelers’ mercurial No. 1 receiver. Pickens will look to get back on track against an exploitable Raiders secondary in Week 6. Pickens has a 28 percent target share and the 19th most air yards among wideouts on the season.
  • PIT Quarterback #3
Wilson is expected to be a full participant in practice this week after dealing with a calf injury for almost two months. Tomlin will likely play rhetorical games about Wilson’s status throughout the week, following a miserable performance from Justin Fields in Week 5 against a poor Dallas defense missing their two best defensive linemen. Fields is likely to get another start in Week 6, though nothing is guaranteed beyond that.
  • NYJ Coaching Staff
The Jets shocked the football world on Tuesday morning when they fired head coach Robert Saleh, who was 20-32 over three and a half seasons at the helm. It appears they’ll stick with Hackett — a longtime member of the Aaron Rodgers orbit — for now despite the team’s offensive struggles over the past few weeks. New York has the league’s seventh lowest EPA per play and 11th worst drop back success rate. The Jets run an uncreative offense that uses play action at a low 20 percent rate. It looks like the team will try to grind their way to victory in a deeply inefficient, outdated system devised by Hackett and Rodgers.
  • FA Head Coach
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will take over as interim head coach. Apparently the Jets had seen enough after three lackluster seasons and a sputtering start to the 2024 campaign. Saleh has had a dicey relationship with Aaron Rodgers, including a couple well-documented sideline interactions that did not appear entirely friendly. Saleh’s defense was elite throughout his time with the Jets. Since the start of the 2021 season, Saleh’s Jets defense has allowed the sixth lowest offensive success rate and has been stellar against the pass over the past two seasons. Saleh had the misfortune of being tied to the success or failure of Zach Wilson, the team’s first round draft pick in 2022 who flamed out immediately. Rodgers’ Week 1 Achilles tear in 2023 was another blow for Saleh, who once again had to lean on Wilson. A defensive coordinator before landing the Jets top job, Saleh, 45, will likely be a popular coordinator prospect during the offseason. He ends his Jets tenure with a 20-32 record.
  • NO Quarterback #4
Carr left in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against the Chiefs with the oblique injury and did not return. He told reporters after the game that he sustained the injury not on a hit from a KC defender, but on his throw downfield on fourth down. Carr said he would make every effort to get right before the Saints’ Week 6 game against the Bucs. “You know me, I’m going to do anything I can to be there,” he said. Jake Haener, a rookie who had 17 yards on 2-of-7 passing Monday night against the Chiefs, would get the start if Carr is sidelined next week.
  • KC Wide Receiver #1
The Chiefs continue to look for ways to get their speedy youngster involved on offense and it is clear they are starting to open up the playbook for him. Mahomes attempted three deep passes to Worthy, two falling incomplete and one drawing a defensive pass interference penalty in the second half. Worthy scored from three yards out on a direct snap to tight end Travis Kelce, who operated a read option and handed the ball off to the rookie for the touchdown. Worthy could further expand his involvement after the Chiefs come out of their Week 6 bye.
  • KC Tight End #87
Kelce led the team in targets and narrowly scored a touchdown on an inside shuttle pass from four yards out in the third quarter. He was tackled at the one and Patrick Mahomes was picked off on the following play. Only Kelce and JuJu Smith-Schuster saw more than six targets, making it likely this offense continues to operate over the short-to-intermediate areas of the field in the absence of Isiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice. Kelce and the Chiefs get a breather in Week 6 before traveling to San Francisco to face the 49ers in Week 7.
  • KC Wide Receiver #9
Smith-Schuster appeared to soak up most of the routes previously run by alpha wide receiver Rashee Rice, paving the way for a potential waiver wire darling as the Chiefs head to their bye week. His eight targets trailed only tight end Travis Kelce’s 10, with only Xavier Worthy’s six looks anywhere near the duo up top. There definitely could be something here considering the state of the Kansas City roster and their recent propensity to work the short areas of the field.
  • KC Running Back #29
Hunt rejoined the Chiefs after Isiah Pacheco’s injury, getting his first start against the Saints after playing most of the final three quarters in Week 4 following a Carson Steele fumble. He turned back the clock in this one, going for 117 combined yards and scoring in the first quarter. Hunt has now tallied 41 carries the last two weeks and appears to be primed for a sizable workload for as long as Pacheco remains out. The Chiefs head to their bye week in Week 6 before traveling to San Francisco to face the 49ers in Week 7.
