The Army and Navy football teams aren’t the only ones coming to town this year.
On Oct. 2, the Army and Navy men’s soccer teams will return once again to PPL Park for the fourth installment of the Army-Navy Cup.
“We’re extremely honored to host such a special event involving the future leaders of our country,” Union CEO and operating partner Nick Sakiewicz said in a statement released by the team. “We’re thrilled that this match has grown to the amazing spectacle it has become, showcasing the hard work these student-athletes give on a daily basis – and what an incredible three matches we’ve seen already.”
Last year’s game drew more than 10,000 fans to the Chester waterfront, in what was one of college soccer’s biggest crowds of 2014. The Midshipmen won the match, 1-0, after Derek Vogel scored a game-winning goal in the 107th minute.
Navy will come into 2015’s matchup with a two-game winning streak over Army.
“This annual matchup, in a magnificent venue, has taken the Army-Navy experience to a new level,” said Navy director of athletics Chet Gladchuk. “Players, coaches and fans have all thoroughly enjoyed a fantastic environment, where every game has been a fight, right to the finish.”
